Local Traditions And Culture Have A Lot Of Influence On...

Local traditions and culture have a lot of influence on gender equality, female empowerment and democratization. Specifically, local cultures often favor males instead of females and give them more education and power in society. Local cultures also refrain from empowering women by keeping them in the home and not encouraging them to get an education. Additionally, local traditions like cultural divisions and tribe based systems make it hard for democracy to be successful. Culture is a society’s manner of life, which involves their language, beliefs, history and social relationships. Civil Society is non-governmental groups like family that act outside of the state. Furthermore, outside powers should use soft power to encourage change,†¦show more content†¦Many societies don’t believe that women should get to go to school because girls and boys don’t deserve an equal education in their culture. When women do not receive education, they are less likely t o get their kids immunized and get their own medical care. Therefore, they are stuck taking care of sick children and they can’t leave the home because they are sick. They are also less equal because they are more likely to become sick from not getting the care they need. â€Å"The majority of the children not in schools are from just three regions of the world: sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East. Girls’ education is particularly neglected in these regions† (367). Gender equality is also very low in these regions. In China and India mainly, women are not thought of as equal to boys and often times when parents have female children they get rid of them because of their lower value. The culture of making boys more valued members of society, leads many female babies to be killed. According to Haas and Hird, over 100 million missing women have been reported in China and India because these is a tradition of men being better than women. Overall, lack of value of women in many cultures makes it very difficult for outside nations to improve female equality because their beliefs don’t approve of women being equal.
